University of Maryland Free Legal Clinic

Currently, the clinic does not have any type of walk-in counselling facilities and we do not provide legal advice over the phone. Since our lawyers are also students, our availability for assistance depends on the academic calendar. Real customers, real cases. Practical legal practice for students. Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) provides life-changing civil legal assistance for eligible residents throughout the state. Since 1911, MLA has been providing quality legal services to marginalized and low-income individuals and communities, helping them resolve their civil law problems and become self-reliant to overcome challenges, achieve stability and independence, and a better life overall. The Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic provides free civil law services to low-income people living with HIV to improve legal and health outcomes for clients. The clinic is a program of the University of Maryland`s Francis King Carey School of Law program that provides legal services to individuals, families, and communities in Maryland and prepares law students for their legal careers. www.law.umaryland.edu/Programs-and-Impact/Clinical-Law/Clinics/Medical-Legal The clinic reviews all requests for assistance on a case-by-case basis. Aside from their time in the clinical law program, students at the University of Maryland`s Carey School of Law are not licensed attorneys and cannot be assigned to represent you in any legal matter. The Office of Student Legal Aid (SLAO) is separate from the Office of Student Conduct, the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct, and the Office of Rights and Responsibilities. At SLAO, we strive to empower students to take responsibility for their cases, and we work with students to achieve a fair outcome. MLA is dedicated to protecting the basic needs and human rights of clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. Members of Parliament staff, volunteer lawyers, community partners and general supporters all have an important role to play in ensuring that the legal playing field is level so that those who need it most have equal access to justice. With this diverse support, MLA is able to amplify the voices of tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged and vulnerable Marylanders each year. Click on the Notarial Services icon if you need a notary. We offer free services for UMD students. Notarial services are currently limited, so please email slao@umd.edu to make an appointment.

Each year, 20 faculty mentor 150 students to provide nearly 75,000 hours of free legal services to the community, making the Clinical Law Program one of the largest public interest law firms in the region. Student lawyers work with faculty members on real-life cases and receive a unique combination of theoretical study and practical experience that prepares them to take off in their legal careers. The office can only help clients who do not have conflict with other students. Since the office serves all students, this would result in a conflict of interest. If you think a conflict of interest may be a problem, contact the office: if we are unable to provide legal advice, we may be able to refer you to another department. Mediation services may also be provided. Our student lawyers work under the direct supervision of faculty members and only in cases assigned to them by the faculty member. We receive many of our cases from organizations such as Legal Aid and Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service. The professor at each clinic makes the decision to take charge of a case based on the students` enrollment and the number of cases they already have in their account for the semester.

Applications for online membership will be considered in the order in which they are received. We aim to respond to all email inquiries within 2 business days. Click the Legal icon if you are experiencing issues related to federal or state law (e.g., landlord and tenant issues, traffic violations, etc.). You should talk to a lawyer.
